Here's an idea that could transform your entire seasonal experience from a dreaded drudge to a festive fiesta. This year, reach for the sky instead of the high street, and fly with us across the sea to the celebrated Dutch and German Christmas markets.

These traditional markets are nothing at all like your average local fruit and veg stalls, but instead twinkling wonderlands based around historical or fairytale themes, with bands, pageants, performances, special events and mulled wine. Cologne has not one but six Christmas Markets, each with its own special character and all in walking distance of each other. The Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral has sundry arts and crafts, unusual gift ideas and a wide range of food and drinks while in the Old Town you'll find the 'Home of the Gnomes' with tradition handicraft goods. Near St. Apostein church stands the Angels Market, and ten minutes walk to Rudolfplatz reveals the Fairytale Christmas market with a Brothers Grimm theme. The Christmas market at Stadtgarten has a relaxed village feel, while the new maritime Harbour Market on the river Rhine has about 80 stalls in sail–like tents and a 3–masted ship serving mulled wine out of its hull. With a Chocolate Museum right next door, what's not to like?

You don't see many hills in Holland, so a castle on a hill is a rarity, even if it is a bit of a ruin. Even less does one expect to find caves, but Valkenburg has several of them. Mined for marlstone since Roman times, these have acquired all manner of elaborate carved decorations and even an 18th–century chapel, and are open to visitors through the year. In December, two of these caves, the Municipal and the Velvet, are decked out in glitz and glamour for the largest underground Christmas Market in Europe, with different themes every year. A third cave, the Wilhelmina, houses possibly the largest and most astonishing display of all, a 30 metre wide and 6 metre high sand–sculptured Nativity scene.

Once you've done Christmas shopping this way, you may never want to go down your local high street again.

Thursday   Meet up at your chosen airport for your early morning flight to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. From here you have a short transfer to Amsterdam and then a full day at leisure. There is an optional canal boat trip (pre–book for £12) if you'd like to see the sights the easy way, or you can go it alone in search of adventure. The city is famous for having over 50 museums but if you've got your shopping head on there's a pedestrianised kilometre of shops along Nieuwedijk–Kalverstraat, the department store De Bijenkorf (The Bee Hive), Magna Plaza shopping mall, and lots more. In the afternoon we will depart for your hotel in Leverkusen (Germany), 20 km from Cologne, arriving in good time for dinner and your first night's stay.

Friday   After breakfast it's off to Cologne for a full day in the Christmas Markets. You are at leisure to shop and dine in the city until the evening when we return to the hotel for the second night's stay.

Saturday   Today we go to Valkenburg aan de Geul for something unusual, Christmas Markets in hillside caves (please note that the caves are located at the top of a steep hill which may prove difficult for passengers with mobility issues). Later we transfer back to Schiphol Airport for the evening flight home.

Here are some example hotels or similar ones that we use for this break, actual availability may change with the travel date you choose.

Some hotels have an additional supplement per person, as shown below. Supplements are stated for the break (not per night)
